Origin of "Arrrr"

Postby FirstMateNate on Mon Sep 14, 2009 6:11 pm

I just discovered today why pirates say "arrrr!"
I was sailing down the lagoon in my little Catboat and overtaking some friends in an Alden Sloop. As I came alongside I stuck my knife between my teeth and intended to say "Prepare to be boarded!"
What came out: "Arr...mpfh...mm...Arrrrrrrrr!" :fsm_yarr:

I always thought was invented during a heated game of hangman ( in those days played with a real person ), the guessing pirate was wrong and asked "Well what letter b teh correct answer matey?" to which the other said R!. Sense then it's been a proclamation of both anger and happiness.
