Saw Pixar's latest movie 'Up' yesterday. I think it's my favourite Pixar movie so far and perhaps the best since Toy Story.

I'm fine with symbolism, but I don't like it when said symbolism is the point of something. A good movie should be a good movie whether or not it has "deeper meaning" This is why I'm not a big fan of modern art, something that doen't look pretty or interesting enough to be noteworthy unless there's some "deeper meaning" behind it should not be worth millions of dollars. Abstract art is fine if it's playing with shapes and colors and textures and stuff (My grandfather did alot of that, some of it's hanging in our house) but if it's trying to mean something, I think I'll pass.

You'll probably find your taste in art will change as you get older. I used to be crazy about Salvador Dali when I was in school but now I'm more of a Cezanne man.

We saw Kill Bill last night. We were surprised at how much we enjoyed it. I thought it sounded like it would be stupid. And it was stupid, but in a good way.

Yeah, Kill Bill was defenitely in "This is so cool!/This is so stupid." territory. But I think the cool won. Total nerdgasam. Katanas, random anime sequence, soccer moms beating each other up... I mean the thing opened with:
"Revenge is a dish best served cold" -Old klingon proverb.
They atributed it to the klingons! How cool is that?!?

IMO, if something looks pretty and interesting, but doesn't have any sort of deeper meaning (or more to the point, something to say), then it's not art. It's just kitsch.

Goldeneye. Brilliant film and actually plausible, unlike the torrent of poo that followed it. Shame Brosnan turned up just as the series was going rubbish.

I agree... art has to EXPRESS something, and to do that it has to use pre-existing "languages", otherwise it might be "original", but it's just mental masturbation whcih communicates nothing but the so-called artist's vanity and presumption. If you don't use the pre-existing "languages" intelligently, and that means mastering them before you try to go beyond them, then you aren't an artist and you aren't really creative!

The Dukes of Hazzard. Definitely in the 'so bad it's good' category.

Watched House on Haunted Hill (the original Vincent Price film!) and Silent Hill recently. I much prefer the Price film to the remake as it was a nice suspense film, and didn't rely so heavily on the supernatural element. That type of film seems to be dying out, sad to say.

Silent Hill was interesting in how they showed the difference between our world and the dream world that the town had fallen into. Shows why intolerance is a really bad thing, too. Not a great film, but possibly worth rescuing from a budget bin.

I love Murder By Death! It spoofs every detective movie they could think of, and has a dream cast. I love Alec Guiness as the blind butler and Nancy Walker as the deaf-mute illiterate cook, who could neither communicate, nor really understand that they were not communicating. And Peter Sellers! And Maggie Smith! And Truman Capote! And And And... I first saw it in middle school, and I'm planning to show it to my kids once they have enough background in other detective movies to get the jokes.

Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny - It was okay. Nothing fantastic, but obviously Jack Black was made for the role. Ben Stiller was good in the small role he did. Kyle Gass was annoying.

There's this metal riff at the end played by Satan, and it's pretty cool.

EDIT: To prevent double post. I just finished watching Get Smart. The new one, came out last year. I enjoyed it. The cheesiness was perfect, Steve Carrell was awesome, and The Chief was fantastic too. Of course, everyone else was pretty good too. The original Maxwell Smart also made an appearance, which was cool.

it was a tradition growing up to watch murder by death with the family whenever it was broadcast on television. my mother and i especially love the film. it's still one of the most hilarious movies i've ever seen! what can be better then the "conversations" between the blind butler and the deaf-mute illiterate cook? everybody in the film just did such a fantastic job!!!!! and the ending! classic!!! of course, nancy walker will always be the paper towel lady to me - hee hee

classic lines from film:
Tess Skeffington: He was arrested in 1932 in Chicago for selling pornographic Bibles. The D.A. couldn't make the charge stick when the church refused to turn over the Bibles.

Sidney Wang: Quiet, please. Observe strange sounds.
[the room is filled with hideous death-groans]
Dora Charleston: Good God! The face! It's coming from the face!
[Sure enough, that agonized moaning issues from the African death-mask on the wall]
Dick Charleston: The victim of that tribal ritual, actually going through his final moments of death! What could it mean?
Jamesir Bensonmum: It means dinner is ready, sir. We have no gong.

Tess Skeffington: There's nothing on him 'til '46, when he was picked up in El Paso, Texas, for trying to smuggle a truckload of rich white Americans across the border into Mexico to pick melons.
Sam Diamond: I think we picked ourselves a queer bird, angel.

I didnt get the difference between our world and the dream world thing... I didnt really know WHAT the hell was going on in that movie... but there were some nice shocks in it... and I love that sexy actress... errr Radar Michel ???
There were some rather shocking bits, like when the woman got skinned alive by the monster on the church steps...
