I find it easier to prise it free with a pencil and save the newspaper for the clean-up stage.
Milo has a heating pad for the car during the winter. It's a plastic disc filled with some sort of gel (it originally had a nice fluffy cover, but he ate that). Heck, I try and defrost meat and it comes out cooked. That's using the Defrost setting.
Microwave is good for heating up, cooking pop-corn and drying herbs. [and socks, so I've heard]
