Well, now that this movie is out and ive finally seen it i think ill do a little raving. first off, its nothing what you think during most of it, and exactly what you think for about 10 total minutes in the whole movie. saying that, its not boring. its just not a torture fest for an hour and a half. its more just sheer hardcore than gross-out.

well im not doing a whole summary of the movie due to some limited time, garrrrr! school!, but ill highlight some points.

the whole first half of the movie cant really be described as porn, but there sure is some nudity in it. its a complete contrast to the ending half.

the first torture scene is of Josh who is in the prescense of a would-be doctor lunatic. he proceeds to drill holes in him with a power drill and cut his Achilles tendons with a scalple. none of these actions can really be seen. you only see the top half of Josh with the scalple act and they cut completely away for the drills. not too intense yet.

Paxton is up next where a hyperventilating little German is about to take a chainsaw to him but then freaks out and cuts off his ring and pinkie finger on his hand. he gets out of his handcuffs and shoots the guy in the head. he then goes through the complex in hopes to escape. he later rescues a Japanese girl who he met at his Hostel. some maniac is blow-torching her right eye. her whole face is nearly burned up and her eye is hanging out of its socket. Paxton takes some scissors and cuts it off in which yellow puss squirts out. this is the gore everyone intended.

final word, see the movie, itll definitly leave an impression

As it has been said, making people barf is no art, to scare them witless without showing anything is ("The Others" with Nicole Kidman was a good one). Alas, artists are even more rare in the horror genre today than in the past.

I admit to being a horror movie freak. I agree with Auntie though; the psycological ones get me the most. (My son too. He watched Saw with no qualms but Signs got to him. And 1 extra in bed with me that night!)

I thought Hostel was *ok*. It made me squirm, I had to peek from between my fingers a few times, but didn't leave any lasting impression. The charecters just weren't lovable. I wasn't overly concerned for them.
(Although I *did* enjoy watching the guy and 2 girls get run over. I even thought "gee he shoulda backed up..." *wham*)

Alltime fave horror flicks that made me look over my shoulder:
-The Exorcist
- The Ring

I collect Hammer movies, they did some of their best before they switched to color.

I've seen the movie, and I actually liked it... Except of a few things, mostly geographical and political mistakes...

The fact that the group of people get out of a train station near Prague and go by taxi to Bratislava, that is one of the mistakes I found quite disturbing. Another thing is the quote - Bratislava is full of horny women because of their men are all at war - oh common, I think that everybody could know, that there's no war in Central Europe...

As I said, I liked the movie, but the geographical (and political) mistakes are just too much...

dont you understand? theres a conspiracy in the movie!!! that weird dude was in on it! he just made up shit to lure the Americans to the Hostel, cuzz lets face it, Americans dont care about Europe much anymore. They wouldnt be concerned with the fact that there is a war or not but the fact that there are horny women! gosh!


but yeah, i totally agree that when he ran over the three traitor bastards he should have backed up. in fact the first time i saw the movie i thought he turned around and ran them over again, only to realize it was the guys chasing them, but for that one second that i thought it was him, that was totally badass.

despite the fact that the movie isnt gonna win any awards and will probably be forgotten in a few years, it still made me go OMG!!! a few times so thats better than a lot of the movies in the horror genre that have come out (the fog, silent hill, the ring 2, the grudge etc etc etc.)

Agreed.

Remember Hitchcock's Psyco? Or his other thrillers? Smoky colors, low camera angles, but mostly, leave it to your vivid imagination!.

My favorite of the 'modern' horror flicks is still the original Halloween. The music, the slow build. The fact that the heroine (Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenager) was actually DOING something besides screaming and flapping her hands ...

I just saw Hostel today, it was graphic but I wasn't very interested in it. I can't really say much more than that.
