The credibility of the Catholic Church?

English isn't much of a language for swearing. When I studied Ancient Greek I was delighted to discover a single word - Rhaphanidosthai - which translates roughly as "Be thou thrust up the fundament with a radish for adultery."

Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela. 58. Cancer.

Guy was a mixed bag. Yes, some of his policies were repressive and he tended to strong arm political opponents. On the other hand, he lifted up the nation's poor, put stability and democracy into a government that had previously been a rotating door of coup-installed dictators, and to be fair, his political opponents aren't exactly models of equality, freedom, and democracy.
"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed'? Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.'" - Carl Sagan

"To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection." - Henri Poincaré

I'm actually surprised to see him die before Castro.

I believe it's time for mankind to set aside the crutch of religion and embrace morality born of reason and truth. Those crutches have long since proven treacherous when the ground gets slippery.

Horror author James Herbert, 69, no cause of death given.

His breakthrough novel The Rats was written about the part of London that I lived in as a kid. I recognised places in the book as places I had played. Places there were apparently huge killer rats...

Chinua Achebe
I read Things Fall Apart one summer. A couple years later my junior high Social Studies teacher assigned it; most of the kids went out of their way to whine that they couldn't understand it. I thought it was amazing.

Link is to a YouTube clip of him reading from his seminal work.
I will honor Monkey in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.

Harry Potter and Withnail & I actor Richard Griffiths, 65, complications following heart surgery.

If you've never seen Withnail & I, I would heartily recommend it. Richard Griffiths, Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann can all act, and they are given the chance to do so. Brilliant soundtrack too...

Well, I seem to be hogging the thread.

Robert Zildjian, metallurgist, cymbal maker, founder of Sabian (kidding! the company was called Zildjian), 89.

A bit more personal, this one. George Ross Watt, AKA 'Big George' of Big George & The Business. Legendary Glasgow blues guitarist and singer, consumer of Jack Daniels, destroyer of Marshall amps and shagger of other people's 'burds'. 54 (I think), death currently unexplained (following a stroke, a house fire and a fist fight with a neighbour).
